Prepare to stimulate

Kelly Davis Posted something interesting today on lastblogonearth.com
Here’s a summary….

Who knows if this has already been widely publicized. All I know is I haven’t seen it. And I’m waiting for it—got some economy stimulatin’ to do.
If you’re doing the direct-deposit tax return thing, your “stimulus payment” will arrive:
May 2 for Social Security #s ending in 00-20
May 9 for 21-75
May 16 for 76-99
If you’d prefer to go the physical check, hold-it-in-your-hand, stroke it, love it, ponder it route:
May 16 for 00-09
May 23 for 10-18
May 30 for 19-25
June 6 for 26-38 (woo-hoo!)
June 13 for 39-51
June 20 for 52-63
June 27 for 64-75
July 4 for 76-87 (they’re mailing out checks on a holiday?)
July 11 for 88-99
If you owe money to the government, have been accused of not returning a book to a certain UC library (bastards) or have other sorts of lingering court-ordered payments, your check may be applied to that debt.

In their new book, “The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict” Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes argue that the Iraq conflict is now the second most expensive war in US history, after World War Two.To illustrate how much 3 trillion dollars is, Tom Tomorrow in his “This Modern World” comic strip […]

The first bit is quoted here:

What do they have in common? I think they all bathe regularly, and I believe they’re all warm-blooded and carbon-based. But another common attribute is that they’ll all be mentioned tomorrow morning a little after 9 a.m. on KPBS’  Editors Roundtable program (89.5-FM, www.kpbs.org).
I’ll be on the panel of guests, long with Andrew Donohue of voiceofsandiego.org and J.W. August of 10News. We’ll be talking about the New Hampshire presidential primary, Mayor Jerry Sanders’ State of the City speech (which will be delivered tonight, presumably carried on TV Channel 24) and the hideous beast that is the explosion of celebrity gossip “news.”
Tune in and call in. We’d love to hear from you.

The first few lines….

Because I’m so fond of Dennis Kucinich and his ideas, I thought I’d pass along this news from his campaign:
WASHINGTON, DC - The Kucinich for President campaign late today filed an emergency complaint with the Federal Communications Commission claiming that the ABC television network “is violating its obligation to operate in the public interest” by excluding Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich from tomorrow night’s scheduled debate in Manchester, NH.
Further, the complaint charges, the televised event “is not a true presidential primary debate without including all credible candidates, but instead is effectively an endorsement of the candidates selected by ABC.” The filing also notes that ABC “is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walt Disney, Co., whose executives have contributed heavily to other Democratic presidential primary candidates, including Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, and Governor Bill Richardson.” (more…)

David Rolland Blogged about a good topic today on lastblogonearth.com
Read this excerpt:

Last night on MSNBC’s Hardball program, host Chris Matthews asked Howard Wolfson, Hillary Clinton’s communications director, about—you guessed it—”change.” I don’t know what Wolfson’s response says about Clinton’s ability to be the president, but I’m absolutely convinced that she’d make a great cashier-in-chief. Here’s the transcript:
Matthews: Is Hillary the change candidate, or is Obama the change candidate? I can’t tell.
Wolfson: Look, everybody is talking about change. So, the question becomes, how do you make change, and what kind of change are you going to make? Hillary Clinton has got 35 years of experience making change, and if you want to know what kind of change she’s going to make, look at the change she’s already made in her life. So, yes, we’re talking about change, and we’re talking about the experience to make change. Some would suggest that experience and change are at opposition. I don’t think so. I think […]

The first paragraph is here:

The Vice President is caught sleeping during a cabinet meeting with the President about the California wildfires. Cheney spokesperson jokes that he has, “taken up meditation.”
“Very funny” says the CNN reporter.
Yeah, real funny.

The first paragraph….

I just got a call from one of Rod Coronado’s supporters, who told me that Judge Jeffrey Miller has declared a mistrial in the federal case against the environmentalist. If a jury fails to reach a unanimous decision, the judge must declare a mistrial, which he has done. Now it’s up to the U.S. Attorney to decide whether or not to attempt to try Coronado again.

Assuming there are some who haven’t seen this yet, check out the video of an angry student being tasered by cops while a confused and ineffective John Kerry rambles on. I heart political theater!

Here’s a quick excerpt
This morning I sat in on a couple hours of closing arguments in the trial of animal-rights activist Rod Coronado. CityBeat editor David Rolland’s been covering the trial (for a compendium of what’s happened so far, go here), but he had an important meeting to attend, so we did a tag-team thing at about 10:15 a.m., just after the prosecution wrapped up its closing arguments.
Tony Serra, the famed civil-rights attorney, spoke for roughly 90 minutes. He’s a trip—the kind of attorney who inspires movies (indeed, the film True Believer is about him). For more on Serra, check out this profile here.
