Eric Wolff Blogged something interesting today on lastblogonearth.com
Here’s a summary….
Just based on their names, Frye & DeMaio sound like a law firm, the sort of LLC that might be found at the bottom of a contract formally merging two banks. But as politicians, Councilmember Donna Frye (D6-Mission Valley) and Councilmember-elect Carl DeMaio (D5 - Rancho Bernardo) are a pretty unlikely pair. Frye is a […]

David Rolland Did a great write-up today on lastblogonearth.com
Read this summary:
The League of Conservation Voters San Diego just announced its endorsement of three candidates for San Diego City Council. Winning the nods were Sherri Lightner in District 1, Todd Gloria in District 3 and Marti Emerald in District 7—all Democrats. No surprise there in Districts 1 and 7. But it’s got to be somewhat of a blow to District 3 candidate Stephen Whitburn, who’s backed by environmentalist City Councilmember Donna Frye. Now Gloria can claim some credentials in the environmental community and diffuse charges that he’s in the pocket of the developers who are helping finance his campaign. No endorsement was announced in the District 5 race, which pits Republican Carl DeMaio against Democrat George George.

The first few lines are here:
Voiceofsandiego.org is reporting that City Council candidate John Hartley pleaded no contest to publicly engaging in a lewd act.
Hartley was arrested on March 27 after reports from a Kensington resident that he had urinated into a cup and masturbated in his truck while it was parked in the 4600 block of Vista Street. He was booked on one count of indecent exposure and one count of soliciting a lewd act. He will be placed on three years probation, pay a $500 fine and must stay away from the Vista Street home, according to the agreement made today in San Diego Superior Court by Asst.
Yesterday, the U-T’s Gerry Braun wrote a fine column on the whole Hartley affair, pointing out that under Jessica’s Law, approved by voters in 2006, Hartley’s offense qualifies him as a sex […]

The first bit is quoted here:
If you’ve been following City Council races, especially District 3, you might be interested in this post by voiceofsandiego.org’s Scott Lewis in which candidate John Hartley talks about why he wants to return to the City Council after deciding not to run again after serving from 1989 to 1993.
This part bugged me:
He said this time around, he would hire a strong manager to be chief of staff for him. “I’ll let him work his magic. He’ll be working with staff and they will answer to him” Hartley said. (my itals)
Hmm… male pronoun? Some grammarians will say that one must use a singular pronoun when referring to a single person and in that case, you must choose a gender. Others say that it’s OK to use a singular “they” or “their.” Granted, the statement would be totally awkward if the male pronoun was replaced by they or their. In fact, it […]

The first bit is quoted here:
I asked Carl DeMaio, in an e-mail, what he thinks of the attack on him by the Labor Council. Here’s what he said:
“LOL
I’m too busy walking my district and talking to people about how we to [sic] fix the city’s financial mess created by the unions and the politicians they have bought over the years.”

Here’s a snippet:
Wow.
The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council is really gunning for District 5 City Council candidate Carl DeMaio. I received this today in my personal e-mail inbox. It depicts DeMaio as a “tax violator,” a “carpetbagger,” a stinky lobbyist and an opportunist who receives public money via no-bid government contracts and then uses that money to campaign for cuts in government services.
It also solicits more “dirt” on DeMaio by linking to a gmail account.
The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council represents 110 different employee unions that, in turn, represent 100,000 “working families,” the group says. The DeMaio attack appears to be the coming-out party thrown by the Labor Council’s new political team—Lorena Gonzalez, who recently took over for chief Jerry Butkiewitz, and Evan McLaughlin, the former voiceofsandiego.org City Hall reporter who took Gonzalez’s old job as political director.
Ironically, the Labor Council has not made an endorsement in the District 5 race, in […]

Here’s a snippet:
As CityBeat predicted earlier, Dan Coffey withdrew his bid for City Attorney this afternoon to endorse City Council President Scott Peters. Coffey adopted 2008’s favorite campaign theme–change–saying, “it is really in the city’s best interest to support Peters,” who he said is the “natural choice” to boot incumbent Mike Aguirre out and turn the office […]

David Rolland Wrote an interesting post today on lastblogonearth.com
Here’s a quick excerpt:
If you were paying attention when Scott Peters announced his bid to unseat City Attorney, you no doubt noticed his comment to a Union-Tribune reporter that he’d been urged to run by folks in the labor, environmental and business communities. Looks like he wasn’t just whistlin’ Dixie, at least not when it comes to labor.
Today, the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, which represents 119 local unions, announced that it had endorsed Peters, along with District 1 City Council candidate Sherri Lighter and school board candidates Shelia Jackson, an incumbent, and Richard Barrera.
The labor council punted when it came to the hotly contested Council District 3 race, opting for a triple endorsement of Todd Gloria, John Hartley and Stephen Whitburn, which allows individual unions to endorse specific candidates, if they so choose.
No endorsements were announced in Districts 5 and 7.
The Peters endorsement once and for all severs ties between Aguirre and […]

David Rolland Blogged about a good topic today on lastblogonearth.com
Here’s a quick excerpt:
San Diego City Councilmember Donna Frye has endorsed three candidates in the race for four City Council seats up for grabs in the June 3 election, but, for now at least, she said she plans to stay out of the city attorney sweepstakes.
Frye is backing Sherri Lightner in District 1, Stephen Whitburn in District 3 and Marti Emerald in District 7—all Democrats. She likely won’t make an endorsement in District 5, where Republican Carl DeMaio is expected to stroll breezily toward election. Frye holds common cause in some areas with DeMaio. While they disagree on issues such as outsourcing city jobs to the private sector (he’s for it; she ain’t), DeMaio is an ally to Frye when it comes to transparency in government. He also endeared himself to her recently when he publicly called for a scenario in which the mayor has nothing to do with selecting or overseeing a […]

The first paragraph is here:
For those of you who want to get a head start on the June 3 City Council elections, live in the district currently represented by Toni Atkins and are particularly interested in environmental issues, on Monday evening, Feb. 11, I’ll be moderating a candidates forum in City Heights sponsored by the League of Conservation Voters.
Candidates Todd Gloria, John Hartley and Stephen Whitburn will participate, but if you’re interested only in beholding the antics of ex-gay Christian crusader candidate James Hartline, you’re outta luck. Hartline has refused to take part because of me. Here’s what he told one of the organizers in an e-mail:
Mr. Rolland, has in the past, sent some extremely disrespectful, bigoted and profane emails to me personally. As such, I have absolutely no intention of particpating [sic] in any event where he is in charge. It is unfortunate, because I have much in common, on evironmental […]
