The first paragraph is here:

In two 2008 baseball preview magazines at Barnes & Noble, the Padres are picked to win the NL West in one; yet the other selects them to finish in fourth place.
This is very representative of the way the division lines up for this season.
John Kruk of ESPN rightfully said Sunday that the NL West is the toughest overall division in baseball. Steve Phillips added that four of the five teams should finish over .500, which is exactly what happened last season.
(And to think the Padres won the division in 2005 with the same 82-80 record that placed the Los Angeles Dodgers fourth in 2007!)
Arizona probably peaked a year early when it won the division in 2007, and now All-Star Dan Haren joins Brandon Webb at the top of the pitching rotation.
Colorado made it to the World Series last year with an incredible run … but it wouldn’t be shocking to […]

The first paragraph is here:

“You reap what you sow.”
Barry Bonds learned this lesson quite well.
And now, Roger Clemens is learning it, too.
Both men have been surly with the media for years … and disdainful to a broad fan base everywhere except where they called home.
Bonds has been dragged through the mud for years because of his horrible attitude … home run record, or not.
Nowadays, Clemens can also stick his seven Cy Young awards where the sun doesn’t shine.
He could intimidate batters with high-and-inside fastballs, throw broken bats at Mike Piazza during the 2000 World Series, and commit other various acts in trying to prove he was the Big Man on Campus.
But trying to intimidate Congress … or have his lawyer attempt to intimidate an Internal Revenue Service representative?
Sorry, that’s out of bounds.
Oh sure, Clemens could defend himself on Capitol Hill by bragging about how he “wore the uniform of the U.S.” during international baseball […]

In a column titled “A King Without a Kingdom,” Cliff Corcoran of Sports Illustrated says Barry Bonds would best fit with the Padres among all the teams in Major League Baseball.
Pleeeeeeeeaaassssssssssseeee!
OK, so the man with deteriorating skills and a perjury charge facing him in court is the all-time home run leader.
Other than that, he’s the definition of class without the “cl,” a clubhouse cancer, a trouble maker, etc. etc.
So, how would that be for a harmonious Padres’ clubhouse on a team that traditionally overachieves because of its unity?
Here’s what Corcoran had to say about Bonds and the Padres:

The Padres came painfully close to the post-season last year, giving them something to prove. They also have a gaping hole in left field, which is currently occupied by Scott Hairston. The drag here is that Bonds is a career .195/.405/.390 hitter in San Diego’s pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Still, the Padres, who have […]

It’s time.
Time for a two-week break from blogging, that is.
Our first five months have been quite a ride.
You always want to remember the high highs:
Predicting back in late April that Jake Peavy of the Padres would start the All-Star game.Saying in early May that the Padres should cut their losses and cut David Wells. But let’s forget about the low lows:
Thinking that the Chargers might pick a linebacker in the first round of the NFL draft.Forecasting that Barry Bonds would break the Major League Baseball home run record in Petco Park (thank goodness we were wrong!)
We will continue the blogging ride on Sept. 4, the day after Labor Day.
See you then.

It’s always nice when somebody becomes nationally-known and still recognizes his roots.
Take Pedro Gomez of ESPN for example.
He’s been on the Barry Bonds beat for a couple of years now; an experience he can’t wait to get off as soon as Bonds hits another home run to break Hank Aaron’s all-time record.
Gomez still remembers where he once was, though. Over the weekend, he reminisced about covering prep sports for the San Diego Union-Tribune in 1989-90.
Rather than talk about the Bonds beat, he recalled covering the South Bay portion of San Diego.
“Is George Ohnesorgen still the football coach at Chula Vista High School?” he asked.
Actually, Ohnesorgen is now the principal at the South Bay high school.
But it’s nice for Gomez to remember his South Bay days; even while being among the media circus of 300 people following the ultra-moody Bonds.

In the immediacy, let’s hope the Padres do not allow Barry Bonds to break the Major League Baseball home run record in San Diego this weekend.
But there’s suddenly an even bigger issue with Padres’ pitching.
Jake Peavy is finally back on track, but:
Chris Young is injured.Greg Maddux can’t go past five or six innings, even when he’s on.David Wells is getting paid $170,000 (on top of his $3 million base salary) each start to get pummeled.Justin Germano isn’t fooling anyone any more with his hanging breaking ball.Enter Clay Hensley. The injury-plagued pitcher has had a terrible 2007 season thus far, but he seems to have regained his form in a pair of three-inning relief stints since being recalled from the minors.
Let’s see how he does in Saturday’s start against the San Francisco Giants.
Luckily for the Padres, the Dodgers and Arizona are not deep in starting pitching either.
So, it may all come […]

Good for the Dodgers!
They have partnered with the Professional Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society and the Taylor Hooton Foundation to host a steroids awareness clinic for local youth at Dodger Stadium today.
More than 100 kids from local little leagues and RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City) are expected to participate. The children will receive instruction in nutrition, proper strength training, the medical implications of using steroids, and hitting. Also, a representative from the Drug Enforcement Agency will be on hand to discuss the legal repercussions of using steroids.
The Taylor Hooton Foundation was founded by his parents, family and friends. Hooton, a 17-year old high school athlete from Plano, Texas, took his own life on July 15, 2003, as a result of the abuse of anabolic steroids. Hooton was the nephew of former Dodger pitcher Burt “Hoot Owl” Hooton (1975-84).
The foundation serves to combat the illegal use and abuse […]

Bad news for Padres fans.
Barry Bonds is going to break Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record in San Diego this weekend.
Doesn’t it figure he will do it against the Padres?
After all, Bonds has 86 career home runs against San Diego. He does not have more than 65 against any other team.
Bonds also hit No. 700 off Jake Peavy of the Padres.
And speaking of the Padres, aces Chris Young and Peavy will not pitch this weekend against San Francisco.
Bonds probably won’t hit record-breaker No. 756 Friday night against Greg Maddux. But don’t be surprised if it comes Saturday against Tim Stauffer or Sunday off Justin Germano.
Let’s hope we’re wrong. Just the thought of Bonds breaking the record in San Diego makes me ill.
