The San Diego City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to encourage San Diegans to “avoid supporting” the “extreme form of animal cruelty” that is foie gras. Brought to the council by the San Diego-based Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL), a group the resolution specifically commends, the action follows the signing of a state law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that will ban the sale or production of foie gras in California at the beginning of 2012.
Foie gras is artificially fattened duck or goose liver produced by the force-feeding of the birds. The resolution cites a 2007 Zogby poll that says 85 percent of San Diegans want foie gras banned within city limits.
CityBeat published a cover story on the practice two years ago.

After working a marathon shift at my day job—I’m a club reporter by night, veterinary technician by day—I’ve realized that there are many, many evacuated people still looking for places to take their pets. My hospital reached capacity early this morning, as did many other animal hospitals in the central San Diego area; but the California Veterinary Medical Association has implemented their Veterinary Disaster Response program to assist those in need.
If you or someone you know needs assistance finding a safe place for a recently displaced pet, you may contact CVMA directly at (800)655-2862, or email them at disaster@cvma.net.

Here’s a quick excerpt
The jury in the Rod Coronado trial has heard all the evidence it’s going to hear, as both the government and the defense rested their cases Thursday. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday morning.
Coronado faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly attempting to incite a Hillcrest audience to commit arson four years ago. Coronado, a veteran animal-right activist, was in Hillcrest on Aug. 1, 2003, to talk about his history of sabotaging companies that profit from destruction of the environment and ill treatment of animals. After his speech, a young woman, Cari Anne Shaw, asked him to show the audience how to “assemble an incendiary device.” His answer, which described how two different types of devices are made, is what has him in hot water.

Here’s a quick excerpt
The judge in the Rod Coronado trial gave the defense a significant victory Wednesday when he signaled his intent to tell jurors that they must find that when Coronado spoke to a Hillcrest audience four years ago, he not only meant to teach them step-by-step how to commit arson but also that arson was “imminent” and “likely” to occur because of Coronado’s words.
“The rubber meets the road, I think, when it comes to jury instructions,” Judge Jeffrey Miller said. The jury gets its instructions before beginning its deliberations, which could start Friday or Monday.

I never knew the city of San Diego had seal/sea lion FAQ on its website. Though I guess it kinda should, just in case one of these gnarly beasts gets a hankering for human flesh. Copy-and-pased straight from the FAQ, exclamation points, misspelled word and all:
Are they dangerous?
Yes!! Like all wild animals, seals and sea lions are unpredictable and can become aggressive quickly. They have sharp teeth and may bite, particularly if cornered or harrassed.
Can I pet them?
No!! You should stay away from the animals at all times.

Then there’s this:
Where can I get further information?
Please avoid unnecessary conversations with the lifeguards. The lifeguards are responsible for watching the swimmers, surfers and divers from Boomer Beach to Hospital Point. This is a large area and requires continual attention. The Library has books on seals and sea lions. Scripps Aquarium Book Store sells books on marine mammals.

DON’T ask the LIFEGUARDS ABOUT the […]

Garden Theme

Today we planted a garden in yoga…
I gave each child a magical pretend seed to plant in the ground. This magical seed can grow in just a few minutes!
Then each child became a seed in Child’s Pose. I gave each “seed” a spritz of water with my spray bottle, and then out came the sun and we grew and grew. Each child got a turn telling me what they grew into- here are some of the amazing things we had in our garden:
Purple Flower
Tree
Sunflower
Roses
Ava Flower
Corn plant

This magical garden was planted to the song, Inch by Inch/Garden Song from the Tajar Tracks album with DEBBIE DEBORD WITH SOL DRIVEN TRAIN AND GWYNN VALLEY CAMPERS. You can listen to it and buy it here:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/soldriventrain2
We also were different critters that you’d find in a garden-
Ladybugs, Bumblebees, Butterflies, Dragonflies, Turtles, and Birds.
If we’d had more time we could have planted actual seeds in a […]

Symbols Of Versatility
Ducks
If you are lucky enough to live in a part of the world that is also a home to ducks, you will no doubt be familiar with the image of their cute feathery bottoms sticking up in the air as their heads disappear under the surface of the water. Perhaps you’ve even taken a moment to wonder what they see in their underwater world, and if they will resurface with a fish or a water bug in their beaks. As we observe them, we see that ducks are denizens of three worlds—the world of air, the world of water, and the world of earth. As such, they have adapted themselves to be able to swim, fly, and walk, and they seek […]
